Important Technical Points
Passing
Lock ankle with toes up when passing with inside of your foot
Toe down turned in when passing with outside of the foot
Step to the ball do not wait for it
Strike the center of the ball
Non kicking foot pointing in the direction that you want the ball to go
Stand on your toes and balanced
Follow through with your pass
Weight and timing of your pass
Receiving Ground Balls
Get in the flight of the ball, behind the ball
Go to the ball, do not wait for it
Cushion ball as it arrives on a pillow
Lock ankle of the receiving foot
Meet the ball in the center
Take your first touch in open space, away from pressure
Use vision and get head up before and after receiving
Turn your hips and receive the ball in the direction you want to go/play next
Shooting/Finishing
Non-kicking foot is parallel to ball (not behind it or ahead of it) and far enough away that it is comfortable to hit ball
Non-kicking foot point at the target
Lock ankle of the kicking foot with toes down and shoot with your laces, do not use toes
Approach to the ball at an angle
Small steps than a big one
Weight is in the ball of the non-kicking foot
Strike the center of the ball
Keep knee bent and check and head over the ball
Follow through on your shot
Land on the same foot that you take the shot
Dribbling
Keep the ball close
Change direction and speed to off balance the defender
Bend your knees and get down low
Use your arms to keep balance
Use the inside, outside and sole of the foot
Vision, look up
Timing of the dribble not to early/late
Recognize when to dribble for possession and when to beat an opponent
Keep body sideways between defender and the ball, ball on outside foot, with shoulder shielding the ball when shielding
Be creative
Use body feints and foot skills
Shielding
Place your body between the ball and the defender
Body sideways between defender and the ball when shielding
Use hands to feel for defenders body position
Arm providing protection when shielding
Spin/turn as defender attacks when shielding-spin toward space
Recognize when and where to change direction
Bend your knees and get down low
Use your arms to keep balance
Keep the ball close using the inside, outside and sole of the foot
Keep your head up
Ball on outside foot when shielding
Defending
1st defender should bend his/her run to press attacker and force the opponent in the direction he/she wants him/her to go
1st Defender - Ball
2nd Defender – Covers
Approach fast, then slow and balance responding to attacker’s ball not feet
Defensive stance-on their toes, knees bent, one foot forward, one foot back
Speed and angle of approach
Pressing defender forces head down of attacker
Covering defender is positioned about 30 degrees behind pressure
Patience; do not over- commit, slide backwards, finds the moment to tackle
